I recently posted this on Facebook and thought I would share it here…
To those of you on a Gluten-Free diet, you MUST, I repeat MUST try the “onion potato bread” and “flax potato bread” made by the “6th Ave Bread & Deli“.
Although this is not an exclusivley Gluten-Free shop, the pans are all sterilized each evening and the bread is cooked first thing in the morning; the staff will caution you if it is your first purchase, to ensure you understand the potential for contamination. All that being said, I have had no problems with this bread and once I realized that, I’ve been eating it like candy.
The loaf looks like a large french bread, the texture is soft and light and chewy, and here’s the kicker, although it tastes delicious toasted it is equally as good without toasting. And if you eat Gluten-Free bread, you know what a feat that is. Oh yes, and did I mention the large and delicious gluten-free loaf of bread costs only $3.99.
This small shop is on 6th ave in New Wesminster, next to the Galloway’s and across from the parkade for Royal Centre (702c 6th Ave, New Westminster).
I’ll try and remember to take a picture to attach here, but no promises.
Seriously, I thought I died and went to heaven when I tried this bread…I’ve already made two trips to New West, infant in tow, for the sole purpose of buying this bread (it freezes well so I buy a lot when I go!).
Finally, last time I was in, they told me they were now making hamburger buns on saturday morning, but they are first come, first serve, so if you live out that way it may be worth a morning trip!
Let me know if you try this bread…and how much you love it!!
HAPPY EATING

Without a doubt the best GF bread on the planet. My wife and I did NOT believe it was GF. It toasts pefect, it has the same texture as wheat based bread, it has flavour… it probably has zero nutritional value – and who cares! They recommend you call the day before so you can make to order. Buy a few loaves and freeze them.

Hi, my Naturopathic doctor referred me to this same bakery recently when I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance. The potato flax bread IS truly a breathtaking discovery among all those other (gag) regular gf type breads available on the market. I’m wondering if I can find a similar recipe to make it myself so I don’t have to travel in and buy bulk loads..however I doubt I can make it myself for as little as 3.99 per loaf! Great bread, great deal.

Hi Gillean
Could you please tell me where you bought this bread as my daughter has just been told she is severly allergic to gluten and wheat and milk and eggs among other things. the naturopath told her to have potatoe bread so this would be great. thank you so much!

FYI – I stopped by the 6th Ave deli last week and discovered that the baker has been hit with the $30K fine because of a complaint that he did not adequately warn people of cross contamination. He is considering no longer making this bread. A sad loss for those of us who can tolerate x-contamination and to whom it would be quiet obvious that it exists even IF he didn’t post signs. This bread has been a godsend to me and others and the baker is a true artist.

Beth – that’s awful – I hope that one person doesn’t ruin it for the rest of us. I know I was explicitly warned the first few times that I went to the bakery and I have noticed that he does have a sign on the cupboard stating that the breads are prepared in a gluten-containing environment. He is an amazing man, I always assumed he made GF bread for a family member, but he was actually inspired to make the bread for a young girl who lives next door…

Mennonite Girls Can Cook – a blog has a Celiac member. She posted a recipe to make this at home – I haven’t tried the recipe myself but other GF items they’ve posted have been great. So for anyone who can’t handle the cross contamination they can try making it themselves.

Hi – just returned from a trip to the bakery. There is a sign and I explained to the baker that I knew there was potential for cross contamination. I was there with 2 kids and he helped me around the store, explained everything he bakes and more. He was so kind and the bread is fabulous.

Just want to let everyone know that Anton’s shut down!!! No news as to whether they will open in a new location.

I was so thrilled to find this bakery. And for three weeks I ate the bread and buns without any noticeable problems. I’m pregnant, so I am already tired and sometimes nauseous with low blood pressure (some of my gluten reaction symptoms). However, my good health came to an end yesterday when I became severely ill. I ate the bread at breakfast, then stayed away for the rest of the day. Today I continued to be very ill and hope that I recover soon. I was not once warned about cross contamination by the baker or anyone else. I’ve been there twice and phoned in an order. There was no warning to me whatsoever. Not once. I was only told that if the bread was sliced by them, then I would have to be concerned about cross-contamination. I chose not to have my bread sliced by them, although I wasn’t even sure if I could tolerate it since I’ve been 100% gluten free for nine months, too scared to try a little in case it made me ill again. Feeling this unwell, so that I can barely function is disabling. No one should have to experience this when they think they are eating safely. He should not advertise gluten-free if people are getting sick from eating his bread. I thought I’d never have to feel this way again. I wish I didn’t hear of his bakery.

So…… I just tried the bread about an hour ago. It is amazing!!! I have never tasted a gluten free bread like it. I am very nervous that I am going to get sick…..fingers crossed. I am calling tomorrow to see how we can get him to work in an uncontaminated area. He has a true gift!

I have now been eating this bread for 6 months. I am not severely gluten intolerant like someone who is celiac so I can not contest that this bread is %100 gluten free. However, I feel so much better eating this bread rather than traditional store bought Dempster’s whole grain or other comparable loaves of bread.
It’s absolutely delicious and I strongly recommend it. 6th Avenue bakery is of course located in New Westminster. However if you live near Langley and are looking for a source you are in luck. A health food store called Country Life located in Brookswood brings in this bread weekly and is more than happy to sell to you 🙂

Have tried a number of Gluten Free products, especially bread. With the exception of one all the others tasted like “Dry Wall”. A neighbour told me about the 6th Avenue Bakery in New West and I plan on going there to try some of their bread. The price at $3.99 per loaf is less than 1/2 of what we are paying now. Will report back on how it goes. Both the wife and I are very much Gluten Intolerant.

I cannot eat it myself due to the cross contamination making me very sick. But I don’t like to feed my family gluten and they are not as sensitive as I am. So I purchase this bread for them. It would be a dream come true if it were not cross contaminated.
